Let's talk branding!
Branding 101 with Doechii, Mannywellz live performance and monthly reset.
Hey so it’s been a year *dad joke*
There’s something about the new year that gets people excited, even myself. Although it doesn’t seem like a big change, time is what keeps us looking forward to things. Getting to celebrate another day, another year – that’s exciting! I’m sure you’ve done all the new year rituals by now, made the vision board, set new goals, gone to the gym, left some people in 2024, lol. But seriously, use each day as an opportunity to refresh and take on the world.
After an exciting 2024 I’m honoring 2025 as my year of learning and with learning comes mistakes, and that’s something I’m okay with because how else will I become a better version of myself. I’m in a new era of my life and I’m learning how to navigate that. I want to use the time to focus on myself and my wellness. I’ve invested in a life coach, I’m finding new hobbies, and I’m limiting my social media usage. I’m hoping implementing these plans will help me stay disciplined and reach my goals this year.
Wishing you all more blessings and success this year!
I had this big extravagant plan to do research and discuss the marketing efforts Kendrick Lamar has done over the last year, right in time for his Superbowl performance. So Here’s The Thing, I changed my mind lol. I recently was speaking with a friend and she was telling me how she is looking to brand more of her personal style. I mentioned to her how I read an article that talked about one of my fav pop girls, Sabrina Carpenter and how her branding has been positive on her career. I started to think about other artists with great branding and Doechii came to mind. And if you had a chance to watch the Grammys this past weekend you may notice many of what I mentioned as a formula below in her acceptance speech for Best Rap Album as well as her performance for the songs Catfish and Denial Is A River.
When it comes to effective branding Doechii and her team do that well because they keep the following formula:
Inviting the audience into a world the artist created
Identifiable sense of style
Creates repetition through settings, looks or phrases
Doechii keep it authentic by representing where she’s from — Tampa, Florida. She refers to herself as the Swamp Princess associating herself with alligators, swamps and marsh, she invites you to her world. She creates repetition through placement of the alligator whether you’ve seen it in her photoshoots, album cover or her most recent tattoo. When it comes to personal style, you may often see Doechii with braided hair, eye tape and a preppy style typically wearing Mui Mui or Thom Browne. Keeping the formula in mind this all works because this is who she has branded herself as and made it so her audience are able to identify her. This is something any artist or creator should keep in mind when branding themselves. What do you want to be associated with?
Mr. Oulala tour – Saturday, February 8 in Washington, DC – This past weekend I had the chance to experience Mannywellz perform live on the first stop of his 15 city tour. I’ll be completely honest I didn’t know much about his music, but I enjoyed every moment of the night. From his smooth r&b vocals to his engagement with the crowd. There wasn’t a moment during the evening where I felt bored. If you want to read more about Manny’s first stop in Chicago check out his interview with Illanoize radio.
